Overview of Knowledge Worker Performance

The subject of Knowledge Worker performance is a relatively new one, and so this overview  defines the structure of the subject, allowing you to find material and gain a basic understanding of our mental model of knowledge worker performance.

As the site grows, increasing amounts of information will be added to each of these subject areas. The material described by this overview is split into three parts: ·
- Introductory material on knowledge worker performance ·
- Information relating to the impact of knowledge worker performance issues on strategy and business planning ·
- Operational issues - how to maximise knowledge worker performance. The operational material provides the bulk of the content of the website and is split into the following categories:

  • Organisational - how to create an environment that maximises the performance of the knowledge worker in a way which has integrity and respects them as individuals.

  • Team - how a group of individual knowledge workers operate together to maximise their overall performance.

  • Individual - how to improve the performance of an individual knowledge worker.

The subjects covered in these areas are:

Culture and management approach - how to manage a business in ways that promote knowledge worker performance.
Information systems - the information infrastructure underpinning communication, both in terms of IT and human networks.

Team selection - how to pick good teams of knowledge workers and compensate for their weaknesses
Communication - how to optimise communication to maximise knowledge worker performance

Individual
Process design - the detail behind the design of individual work tasks
Time management - organisational skills for the individual knowledge worker
Mental technologies - the use of approaches to knowledge worker performance that relate to better use of the individual's mental capability.
Personal Development - how knowledge workers can develop themselves in all aspects of their lives
